This is pretty much what it says on the cover - 100 experiments that one can carry out at home, ranging from the gross (how much do certain foods survive the digestion process) to the explosive (what happens when you drop certain sweets into a bottle of Coke). All is inspired by the Last Word column in New Scientist magazine, though this book isn't as fascinating as the questions and answers from there preserved in Why Don't Penguins' Feet Freeze?.

All the experiments here are aimed at enthusiastic youngsters, under the assumed oversight of a parent or other responsible adult. This is one for dipping into, rather than going from start to finish.

The eponymous experiment is the one that'll take longest, by the way. You're not going to see the results of laying, for example, korenwolf in undisturbed mud for quite a while. A few generations won't be long enough.

I saw this in Tesco and was jolly tempted to get if for bugshaw but was persuaded forcibly that this would be mean and insensitive .

"And your point would be?" I replied , whereupon it was pointed out that bugshaw might hit me , possibly with a fossilised hamster....

If it wasn't for the fact that we've got one live hamster in the house, and three expired buried under the apple tree in the garden, this would definitely be something I'd buy for one of the kids for Christmas.
