The overall story keeps going, and occasionally a new character appears, or some new information comes up. Kurtz is good enough to let his characters deepen as they develop, and it's a mark of his characterisation that all the characters end up on some occasions annoying, at other times sympathetic, just as real people do.

Except I could do without the damned panda, because to me it jars.
