New shiny

Following [livejournal.com profile] autopope's suggestion, I have now replaced my creaking-at-the-seams, bulky and battery-dead MP3 player with a smaller, lighter and more capacious model from Apple(!), namely a second hand 80GB 5th generation iPod.

I've now loaded 50+ GB of music onto it (thank you, Media Monkey - no iTunes will be allowed on this machine).

I have to say, it's pretty cute for its generation.

The reason for going for that is that the new generation of models from Cowon and Co. look very nice, but I think that what I really, really want isn't quite here yet. Namely, a flash-based one that understands the SDXC flash format, and that can head for the 128GB mark. So I'm going with the iPod for now. If I get a few thousands hours of listening out of it (which I reckon I did with my previous one), I'll be happy.

(One of these days, I may total how much an hour I've been paying to listen to music on MP3 players. The previous player amortised at about 5p/hour. The earplugs have been more than that - they're newer - but they show no sign of giving up yet.)

Where did you get it from? My mum has offered to buy me a bigger MP3 player for xmas, I currently only have a dinky iPod Shuffle, which worked fine as a Walkman for train journeys, and the like, but now I'm using it in the car, I want something a bit beefier.

eBay. Bid on Friday, got it today. Since one of my requirements was an ability to use it without having to have iTunes (herself has an iPod Touch, which she loves, but she hates having to use iTunes for it, or for her car player), anything newer was (apparently) out of the question.

I have the same model 80Gb 5thGen (iPod video) and aside from damaging the headphone socket when I fell over with the headphones plugged in, it's been fine for many years now. I still use it, though I'm using a wired remote through the docking connector that has a headphone socket (sometime I will spend the £40 to get the headphone socket repaired).

It's lovely :-)

But I *do* use iTunes, but set it to manually sync. Don't really like iTunes, but it works.

I use iTunes, don't auto-sync, still swear at it when it copies things in the wrong order. "No, I did not want to listen to Part 2 of [book] before Part 1, I'm possibly unusual in that respect." Mind you, the books are being transfered into iTunes from Audible before hitting my iPhone, so I have no idea what shenanigans both of them get up to when I'm not looking.
