Hmm, this was one of a bunch of books bought when we went to see LOTR:ROTK at the cinema in Cambridge. The rest were read over the new year period, before I started on this meme just over seven weeks ago. However, this got lost in the side table on the other side of the bed, so I only just noticed it.
Slightly more annoyingly, it's not the first Artemis Fowl book, but the second. I hate that, but it's not too much of a problem this time.
Artemis Fowl is that rarity, a genuine child genius and (apparently) master criminal in post-cold-warBritainIreland. And there are elves, kobolds, goblins, dwarves and other supposedly fictional creatures living beneath the earth. Except - these aren't the traditional figures of myth, these are high tech beings who've learnt how to adapt AAA batteries to their laser rifles. And their authorities hate Fowl's guts, believing him one of their greatest threats.
Add to this a plot where Artemis must recover his father from the Russian Mafiya, the Fairy Folk must ally with Artemis to find the truth behind the AAA battery smuggling, and fast and furious action, and you've got something that although aimed at kids is just generally good entertainment. Not deep, but not formulaic either.
