I'm amused by this BBC report: a cider factory in Shepton Mallet is cooling its cider by running it through a heat exchanger at the nearby swimming pool.

Excellent idea. I was just wondering if anyone had done this when I was swimming the other day, though I was thinking beer brewing.

In my old hometown, Östersund, they're busy connecting the sewage works to a heat exchanger at a ... whatchacallit... remote heater? A central, highly efficient heat creation facility, from which heat is piped to houses in the surrounding area? Instead of having to spend lots of money to cool the sewage to keep it at an optimal temperature for the bacteria, they use it.

They've already fitted one of those whatever they're called to the town dump, taking advantage both of the heat generated by the decomposing waste, and burning the generated methane.

But now of those examples are as amusing as the cider-heated pool, I admit.

*g* beeblebug has been at that pool most afternoons after school this week - it's an outdoor pool/lido, so decent weather is pretty much essential. It is just at the top of the hill over the back. The pool itself was originally built in an obsolete cooling tank or something dating from when the Anglo-Bavarian Brewery (first lager brewery in the UK, afaik) was still up there.
