For anyone that is interested, the distance from central Buckingham to Juniper Hill is actually 8.5 miles, assuming you take the old road through Tingewick and not the new bypass. It's 7.9 miles to the Barley Mow crossroad roundabout.

According to Google maps.

On the other hand, that end bit of route is distinctly not-at-all direct, and it would not surprise me if a path across the fields from the A421 could reduce it to a smidgen under 8 miles.

Oh yes - Juniper Hill is cognate with Lark Rise, and Buckingham with Candleford. The story is pretty autobiographical, with some names changed, and Candleford being based slightly on Fringford (a place that I've never been to, a mile or two from where we got our cats, but which is where Flora Thompson moved to) but mostly on an actual nearby town, i.e. Buckingham.
