You know, the thing that really worries me about the LHC is that when I was a postdoc, I did some paid technical drawing work for the S/O at the time....

.....who was one of the leads on the LHC project. These were the plans for bits of the LHC that had to be 'millimetre perfect'. As it grows nearer to the flick of the switch, I do wonder just how accurate I was.

If the end of the world is nigh, I blame the low rates of pay for Oxford postodocs in the mid 1990s.

Parts of the apparatus have potential problems with the way that 12 story high empty chambers in solid rock have a habit of slowly floating upwards.

I think they're looking at something of the order of a third of a millimetre per year.

I'm only going to accept responsibility if it affects 'ATLAS', and even then, tough poo-poo, they should have paid better rates.
