Oops

There is, inside the entrance of the Corn Exchange in Cambridge, a wooden board listing the various sponsors and donors who have assisted the venue.

It is gratifying to see a number of the colleges listed.

It is a tad less gratifying to see "St Catherine's College, Cambridge" as one of them.

Dear Corn Exchange - please note: the Cambridge college is St Catharine's. St Catherine's is an inferior establishment in The Other Place.

As a Catherine, I feel I must on general principles say "Bblblblbppptthbt."

You're perfectly permitted to be a Catherine. I'm not saying that 'Catherine' is in general incorrect.

The problem here is that the name of the Cambridge College uses the 'Catharine' spelling, and yet this venue a few hundred metres away gets it wrong.

(If, OTOH, you're insisting on Catherine in all cases, then have a nice day, and "blllpppttblbvpl" back to you.)

Nah, others can be Catharines, that's fine. I just vaguely felt I should defend the E even if it was incorrect in this case. :)

As an Oxonian, I second the raspberry.

Oh, Chaz, Chaz. You can overcome that handicap. After all, I did.

There's a lot of C/Katha/e/ryn/ines about atm.
