Network speed

So why does telling the router to drop and restart its ADSL connection get it back up to about 6Mbps download speed from somewhere around stunned slug speed?

No, the signal strengths didn't appreciably change before and after.

I'd assume something was reset at the other end.

Can the modem train speeds up as well as down? On POTS (audio) modem signalling, speed can be negotiated down but not up, so a brief burst of noise will slow your connection down until you re-negotiate from the start.

Hmm, that's an interesting point. It's been falling away over some days I think. I know too little about ADSL to be able to guess.

Well, you see, like all pipes, over time they start to get clogged up with random bit sticking to the walls of the pipe. Forcing a restart flushes the pipes through and all of the crud drops out the little holes in the router. Be careful if you're walking around near where that router, you might trip over the invisible data fragments.

gah - er add in the odd letter or word to make that make sense (s, is) :)
