Network speed

So why does telling the router to drop and restart its ADSL connection get it back up to about 6Mbps download speed from somewhere around stunned slug speed?

No, the signal strengths didn't appreciably change before and after.

Can the modem train speeds up as well as down? On POTS (audio) modem signalling, speed can be negotiated down but not up, so a brief burst of noise will slow your connection down until you re-negotiate from the start.

Hmm, that's an interesting point. It's been falling away over some days I think. I know too little about ADSL to be able to guess.
