Why we love cats

Being ... well, not actually woken up, but disturbed from attempting to get to sleep at 01:40 this morning by a low growl from our bedroom wardrobe.

The tom, Kosh, had brought a dead pigeon in.

At least I got it off him before the whole place got covered with feathers.

Oh, it wasn't chewed or anything, and was at that happy median between still warm and cold-and-rigid. No dripping blood. Very neat, in fact.

An hour later would have been a different matter, though.

The morning before we left for a fortnight's holiday in France, a few years ago, I noticed Dastardly behaving suspiciously near our bed. Fortunately I investigated and found a recently dead bird underneath. That would have been nice to come back to!

Depending on the weather, that could have been pretty whiffy!

Our cats don't seem to have much luck with the birds. Mice, rats and squirrels we get aplenty, which at least means we don't usually get feathers everywhere...

Kosh seems to be pretty effective.

One time, he came in with a bird he'd caught off a branch. We could tell this by the leaves still in his mouth.

Our two seem to be the most effective squirrel-killers I've seen. They've decimated the local tree-rat population since we moved here.

Not really sure if generally they don't have luck with their hunting methods and birds or if thye just find other things more fun.

They're cats, so I'd guess they'd say the second. Or maybe your local avians are a touch too canny to come in reach, but anything catching squirrels is certainly a decent hunter.
