One guess as to what this is parodying. Yes, it's another Roberts instant pisstake. The author does write thoughtful stuff under the Adam Roberts name, but ever since he did a Tolkein takeoff under this name, he's become a bit of a specialist in the art of taking the fashion du jour, giving it a light twist and removing the serial numbers, and pumping out a nearly instantly forgettable parody. Which is not to say this is bad - unlike what some writers could have produced - just that it's not really good either. He does poke at the obviously silly inconsistencies, such as the Doctor's unremarked paternalistic tendencies (most obviously shown in the Christmas episode of a year back, when the Doctor effectively destroys a PM who has made her own decision to defend her people), and there are some amusing bits, but in the end, it's a piece of fluff.
Not exactly challenging, but then, it's not expected to be.
