While we were at Fasnacht in Basel earlier this week, we were bemused at the proportion of the floats ('laderne') devoted to the subject ('sujet') of Muammar al-Gaddafi. In all our years of attendance, I don't think we've seen so many mentioning a single theme, which appeared to be the Libyan leader tearing Switzerland apart, with or without the acquiescence of Germany, France, Italy and the US.
One float even depicted Gaddafi recreating Hannibal's crossing of the Alps - in this case, the riders on the elephant were Gaddafi and Hannibal Lector, though the knowledgeable will be aware that one of Gaddafi's sons actually is named Hannibal.
At the time, we wondered what it was all about, since we'd expected somewhat more on the referendum about minarets instead. However, here, perhaps, is a reason why.
