While we were waiting for yesterday's Skeptics in the Pub (Cambridge) to start, there was a football match being displayed on the large-screen TV in the pub upper room. It was Everton versus Sporting Lisbon, but while Everton was abbreviated to 'EVE', Sporting Lisbon was, for some reason, abbreviated to 'SCP'.
So I checked.
It turns out that the club in question is actually called Sporting Club Portugal - and therefore 'SCP' - and that there is no actual Sporting Lisbon club at all, merely a common misnomer.
Right, puzzlement over.
