OK, so sometimes I slum it. Jack Chalker was never the greatest writer around, but he was usually entertaining. He also had a habit of never writing a single work when a trilogy would do, and this is the first volume of the Quintara Marathon.

A gigantic alien structure is found, on a border world. It apparently contains what seem to be the gigantic demons, horns and all, that the three civilisations all have as ancestral memories. From all three civilisations, a party sets out to investigate. The novel attempts to follow events from the points of view of all three civilisations, but sadly fails to have any believable characters, as the participants are mostly there to illustrate their respective cultures - extreme theological, capitalist or just plain nasty. All in all, it falls somewhat flat: Chalker usually did better.
