Back in Gridlinked, we encountered a brass killing machine called 'Mr Crane', used by the particularly nasty antagonist of that book. Here, we meet the Brass Man again, and follow from his genesis through his struggles not to be what he is. Meanwhile, other stories are taking place, as artificially intelligent starships get into disagreements, and a deeply dangerous technology looks to threaten the entire known galaxy.

The internal world of the Brass Man is compelling - the arbitrary actions seen in the earlier novel now have an explanation, even if not a predictability.

There's an awful lot going on here, and it's possible to lose track of who's who in the complexity. But there's also a richness of imagination that I really like.

Is your copy broken? Mine was, which added to the confusion somewhat. (It had a batch of pages repeated with a not quite equal-sized chunk missing.)
