The third volume, and yet more complications occur. I think the Clan is gathering one major new enemy each volume. Here, an ex-boyfriend of Miriam's (already mentioned in an earlier volume) is tasked to find her and to try to open a communications channel to the Clan. But Miriam herself, though not prone to stupidity, does finally make a misstep and end up in serious trouble.
Don't expect a clear conclusion here, either. This ends in the middle of a battle.
