Actress Billie Piper is to leave Doctor Who at the end of the current series.

I trust that David Tennant will be staying. You've got to have some continuity, doncha know?

I'm sure I read on the Beeb a while ago that David Tennant had signed up for Series 3.
But then again, I thought I'd read that Billie Piper had too...

I'm sure I heard somewhere last year that Billie Piper would be leaving towards the end of this season and the Doctor would have a new companion. And that was a pretty obvious hint in "The Satan Pit" that the Rose character would be killed off, and all this emotional stuff between her and the Doctor is just to build that up. Feh.

Addendum: I think the reason why the new DW is losing popularity, is not so much Tennant and the patchy scripts, but the blatant, heavy handed and telegraphed emotional manipulation this season - the hints, the music, etc. I love a romantic subplot, even with star crossed lovers - that's why Buffy appeals to me so much, but the Doctor's interactions this year with Sarah Jane, Mme Pompadour and Rose have just irritated me and are a turn off.

Hmm, an interesting point. The Doctor is supposed to be watching out for people in general, not just for his companion.

Not just that, but he is too emotional. Having grown up with Pertwee and Tom Baker, I keep thinking to myself "the Doctor wouldn't do that!"

If you could get a bit of Ecclestone into Tennant, that'd be good. But also, the Doctor is supposed to be an outsider. He's getting a little too humano-centric for my liking. The Rose relationship is an extreme example of that.

But hey, he's lost his own entire race. Maybe he's going for humans because we best remind him of his own people.

(Ignoring the fact that humans are the only known paying viewers for the TV series, of course.)

There was a cheer from the four of us sitting on my bank of desks when one of the four of us spotted the news item on the BBC site.

That Rose is going? That Piper is going? Or that Tennant is staying?

Apologies for the lack of clarity - it's that Rose is going. Although at least one of the four of us would also be very happy to see Tennant's version of the Doctor go, too.

Yep.

I think Piper has done a surprisingly good job with the Rose character (quite made her name), but the whole romantic subplot has got a bit overbearing, and the only way to get rid of that is to lose either Rose, or the current Doctor.

Tennant's Doctor is a smidgeon too frivolous for me - if only we could ross him with Ecclestone.

Hmm, I think Jonathan is camper.

On the other hand, that would be wossing him.

It's just not grabbing me the way it should. I missed the first part of the most recent two-parter and I didn't even care enough to catch the repeat. More than half the episodes come across as standard soap opera plots - and I really really dislike soaps :/

Agree on both points.
I'm a bit sad though too - apart from the factv that romance is getting abit Ross/Rachel, I like having a young spunky independent companion - I hope we don't get some kind of opposite reaction next time.. Alsoif Rose dies will we have a grieving doctor for a season like Willow when Tara died. That would be odd, to say the least..

I was going to say something witty in reply to this, but ... I'm lost for words.
