Barrington J Bayley: Eye of Terror (A Warhammer 40, 000 Novel)

Paperback: 288 pages
Publisher: Black Library (1 Nov 1999)
ISBN-10: 1841541052
Category(ies):

There are a lot of Bayley's novels that I remember with great affection - The Grand Wheel, perhaps, or The Fall of Chronopolis. But sadly, he doesn't seem to write those fizzing stand-alone novels anymore, and this is the first book of any form that I've seen with his name on the cover for many a year.

Well, it's a game tie-in, and that means he's stuck with someone else's universe, someone else's setting. And though this is suitably weird (demons the size of suns, a planet shaped like a sculpted rose), it's not going to satisfy those who remember his great work. I can't really recommend it as a result, because it's effectively a novel in the middle of a much larger story, mostly (entirely?) written by others, and it'd be like recommending a Star Trek novel.

(There are some pretty good ST novels. There is also some absolutely rotten tripe.)

A sad reflection on his past glories - having to write tie-ins..
