The third novel in the Black Magician trilogy.

Sonea is now the novice of the High Lord, the head of the guild and also, unknown to them, a Black Magician. But though even knowing Black Magic is a capital offence, Sonea is beginning to see that life isn't that simple. And then, a threat from a whole group of Black Magicians threatens the whole Guild, the whole city, the whole civilised region.

So the moral choices here are much more interesting than what was promised in the first book. Again, we have a book of two halves. We also have a book of three love stories (one gay, two straight), only one of which has a happy ending. It may be even longer than the previous one, but the author has managed to produce something that is fast-paced and, dare I say it, really quite entertaining.

A good finale to the series, though leaving some possibilities for other stories with other characters.
